The brief here was patience. Rather than empty the house and start again, we worked through it room by room over an extended period, which kept the family living in it throughout and spread the cost across several years.
Downstairs stays calm and warm — a crimson wall in the snug is the one deliberate raised voice, set against built-in shelving and a pair of wingbacks. Upstairs the palette softens into sage, chalky greys and duck-egg blue, with a hand-made tree bookshelf in the children’s room that has outlasted three changes of taste.
The bathrooms were where the budget concentrated: a freestanding bath against bookmatched marble in the principal, and a deep blue family bathroom that makes a virtue of having only a skylight for daylight.
